Frequently asked questions
How much does an SSD upgrade cost in Houston?
SSD upgrades at Houston Computer Repair Experts start at $49 for labor. A 500GB SATA SSD typically costs $50-$80, and a 1TB SSD runs $80-$120. NVMe SSDs (faster, for newer machines) are slightly more. The upgrade includes full data migration from your old drive — you don't lose anything. Turnaround is typically fast on most models.
Is an SSD upgrade worth it for an old laptop?
Almost always yes. An SSD is the single biggest performance upgrade you can give any computer. If your laptop has a traditional hard drive (HDD), upgrading to an SSD will dramatically improve boot time (from minutes to seconds), application launch speed, file copy speed, and overall system responsiveness. A $100-$150 SSD upgrade often makes a 5-year-old laptop usable for another 3-5 years.
Can you upgrade the RAM in my MacBook?
It depends on the model. Older MacBooks (pre-2016 MacBook Pro, pre-2018 MacBook Air) have user-replaceable RAM that we can typically upgrade quickly. Newer MacBooks with Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) and recent Intel models have soldered memory that cannot be upgraded after purchase. Bring your MacBook in and we'll tell you exactly what's possible — free assessment, no charge.
Can you build a custom gaming PC?
Yes. Houston Computer Repair Experts builds custom gaming PCs to your specifications and budget. We source components from reputable manufacturers (AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, Corsair, Asus, MSI), assemble the build, install Windows and drivers, run stress tests, and deliver it ready to play. Tell us your budget and what games you play — we'll spec a build that hits your performance targets.
How much RAM do I need?
8GB is the minimum for basic use (web browsing, email, documents). 16GB is the sweet spot for most users — comfortable for multitasking, light photo editing, and general productivity. 32GB is recommended for video editing, programming, heavy multitasking, and running virtual machines. 64GB+ is for professional workstations doing 4K video, 3D rendering, or large dataset work. We assess your actual usage and recommend accordingly.
Do you replace laptop batteries?
Yes. Houston Computer Repair Experts replaces batteries on MacBooks, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Asus, and other laptop brands. Signs you need a new battery: the laptop dies quickly, won't hold a charge, shows a battery warning, or the case is swelling (replace immediately if swelling — this is a safety issue). Battery replacements typically cost $49-$149 depending on the model with a fast turnaround.
